Altertox was founded in 2012 in Brussels, Belgium and qualifies as a SME (Small Medium Enterprise) with two full time employees and one freelance. Altertox has two main activities: advocacy (Altertox Public Affairs) and trainings (Altertox Academy) both linked with 3Rs (replacement, reduction and refinement) on laboratory animal uses. Advocacy is the historical activity of Altertox that is running since February 2012 and was subcontracted exclusively to CAAT Johns Hopkins University (USA) and CAAT-Europe University of Konstanz (Germany).
During the last 5 years, Altertox has organised and collaborated in ca. 17 events and briefings on 3Rs for members of the european parliament (MEPs) (see Annex1). The size of the events ranged from 20 to 120 participants. The quality of the policy work was awarded and recognised in 2014 with two consecutive prizes: In June 2014, “EuroGroup for Animals” has celebrated CAAT as “Partner raising standards for animal welfare”. In November 2014, the Policy program was awarded the Lush Prize for its lobbying activities. Altertox Public Affairs actively lobbied on multiple files such as:
Horizon 2020 program: CAAT introduced text changes to support EU research on alternative test methods rather than animal testing
Protection of public health from on endocrine disrupters: support for the use of human cell-based models
Regulation on medical devices: Annex I section 7 was improved to allow animal-free methods.
